But I was only fooling....

So, should this guy get a pass because they didn't find any of the 'top secret" documents he offered to Iraq and Libya in his possession? Or, should he be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and face the death penalty if convicted? Allegedly he offered over 800 pages of classified material to Iraq and/or Libya in exchange for 13 Million Swiss francs.

I think he's gotta go down hard.

Treason should always receive the death sentence. I suspect when someone is given life "...in return for cooperating..." that what has happened is the guy promises not to tell anyone how stupid and easily outfoxed his superiors were in return for life.

Possibly, but I think it has more to do with the government trying to keep the other side guessing about what they know, or don't know. For instance Iraq wouldn't know to what extent it's assets have been drawn out and burned, or turned. It would only feed Huessien's paranoia, possibly causing him to purge his own intelligence people, there by doing our work for us. The trick is to keep our enemies fumbling for what we know.
