That level of competence would mean that they are giving people the information to make an informed choice. Can't have that when you are trying to steer public opinion in a specific direction. Couldn't be just a touch of coverup for a certain side in a debate now could there? If the anti-war crowd repelled anymore people they would drop off the radar.
