Hope you weren't too big a fan of the original BG, 'cause according to Olmos himself, you'll probably hate the new version. Go read the producer's thoughts on the new BG - it sounds like an empty corporate mission statement rather than a manifesto to revitalize the science fiction genre.
And then there's the boobies (Starbuck and Boomer are now women, and the princical Cylon character is too - and called "Six" How original!). Mind you, I'm all in favor of boobies, just not at the expense of destroying fundamental aspects of the series you're supposed to be resurrecting. In fact, I'm not even sure why they're even bothering to call this Battlestar Galactica. They'd have been better off pushing for mature stories and depth of character and story in an original work rather than shit upon the one demographic (BG fans) they could have otherwise counted on for support.
But that's just me. Oh, and my wife, who isn't a big BG fan, but is still horrified with what they're doing with this show. YMMV...
I'm open minded about it, I loved the premise, lone battle ship shepherding the last surviving humans to find the 13th lost tribe on earth. I'm not attached to any particular character, I do love watching Olmos, have since Miami Vice.
Do I expect an exact copy, no, I don't think I would want one. Like the incarnations of Batman, The Hulk and even Star Trek, they changed the image to better fit, or sell.......with the times.
I just want decent writing, interesting characters, and to be pulled out of my world for a while. That maybe too much to hope for, but not to ask I think.
Posted by puggs at August 14, 2003 09:49 PMI was too young to catch BG the first time around... me feeling is, I'll watch it, and see what I think. I know what I like in a sci-fi show, so that's what I'll look for.
Posted by Mollbot at August 15, 2003 02:54 AMThe thing that irks me is that as a longtime member of fandom, I've seen Richard Hatch (the original Apollo) showing up at all the conventions trying to bring back this show for years. And now the SciFi channel is giving him the back of their hands. Not much in the class department.
Posted by SDN at August 15, 2003 06:43 AMThe first couple of installments of the original interested me but that ()*W$&^ robodog put the nail in the coffin, well, that and the hair...
Posted by John S Allison at August 15, 2003 09:58 AMThe Robot Daggit? yeah pretty dumb, guess that was aimed at the kids.
SDN, I didn't know about that with Richard Hatch, but I'm not surprised, There's as little honor among producers and directers as there is among thieves. A reoccurimg cameo wouldn't have been difficult to include.
Like the Buck Rogers series, BG opened with promise then?.........Bad writting on BR is what destroyed a promising idea. Gil Gerrard? Jesus, they could have done better. Although BG was better done, I don't believe they really had thought it through. I was part of the letter writting campaign to bring back the show when it was abruptly cancelled. Galactica 1980 was an abortion, not worthy of notice. Most of the original cast was gone and all the sets were destroyed, it felt and looked like a cheap high school film production.
I've been burned as much as everyone else, I just keep hoping that this time, they won't mess it up.
Hair, it was the seventies, and at least the costumes weren't polyester with bell bottoms.
Posted by puggs at August 15, 2003 01:18 PMDon't get me wrong, I'd be happy to see a BG remake that did away with the 70s cheese while retaining the good parts of the show. I would absolutely *love* to see a remake that dared to be more than Wagon Train in Space. But frankly, the vibe I'm getting from this project is more like the nickname for the Starship Troopers movie - Melrose Space.
