First time in 5000 years.
I actually heard a female BBC reporter say that there are more women on the streets in the capitol than any other time in the three years she's been visiting Afghanistan.
Sadly, there has been some violence.
A bomb exploded at a polling station in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif early today, a Western official said, shattering what had been a relatively calm start to Afghanistan's first-ever presidential election.
There was no immediate word on casualties.
