Gone Shootin'
It's Blogger Blastorama Day!
In cased you missed it earlier in the week, here is where I'll be today starting between 1200-1300.
Unfortunately, Rivrdog had to bow out do to weather related responibilities at home. But when ya gotta go shooin', you gotta go shootin', so off I go to the range to catch up on some missed range time.
With me, I'll have an SKS, Bushmaster XM-15, 10/22, 1911, S&W; Mod14 in 38Spl, CZ-83 in 380ACP and a Ruger MKII. You can bring what you got or you can just bring yourself.
Hope to see you there.

Blastorama Time!
Git yer guns out and ready, It is the January edition of the Blogger Blastorama, folks!
When: This Saturday in between 1200 and 1300.
Where: Renton Fish & Game rifle and pistol range
Why: Because it's January, of course.
What to bring: Yourself and a good attitude!
Optional: Almost any rifle, pistol or shotgun and a sufficient quantity of ammunition that will fire in those firearms.
I will be there with a decent selection of firearms and a couple of hundred rounds for each. The Rivrdog will also be making the trek up to do some shooting and hanging out with friends he has locally (plus, I heard there was a Boat Show going on at the Seahawks Stadium in Seattle).
You can follow the link to Renton F&G;'s website to see the facilities and their rates.
I would like to especially encourage new or novice shooters to join us. You do not need to be a blogger to join in the fun. Friendly lurkers of the ether are welcome too.
Also Optional: We may gather somewhere nearby for breakfast/lunch, but deatails have not been nailed down as of yet.
To reader Kyle, you asked about the guy who is building my gun yesterday. If it is possible for you to join us, you are especially welcome. If not send me an e-mail and I'll give you his contact information.

Blastorama After Action Report
Is it over already?
The December Edition of the Blogger Blastorama was a smashing success, if I do say so myself. In attendance were The Rivrdog, the gracious Ms. Leigh, newcomer MikeG and myself.
Ammo was expended in quantity, making barrels warm, paper targets had holes punched in them and a good time was had by all.
Almost sounds like a Christmas Carol, doesn't it?
And the guns, can't forget the guns now, can we?
MikeG brough some very, umm, specialized weaponry with him.
(all pics are 'click for bigger')
And holy smokes, do these things get the job done!
1" circle, 30ft, rapid fire. By MikeG and his long barreled High Standard.
He normally practices on bowling pin tops. I feel sorry for those bowling pins.
The Rivrdog also brought a few items of lead projection up from Oregon with him.
That is him with his recently purchased High Standard. I should have also gotten a picture of him with his A-Team, but I was being the host and doing more talking than taking pictures. I will try to do better next time.
And last, but certainly not least, the most heavily armed soccer mom I currently know, Ms. Leigh and her recently purchased AR.
Look at that smile! Just like when the kids come home from school with refridgerator art!
And in case you were wondering what the back of the mini-van of a pistol packin' mama looks like, look under the fold.
Let's see....
Spare blanket, roadside emergency kit, notebooks for the kids and school, 'assault rifle' with case and spare mags, large quantities of ammo and targets.
Looks like she's got everything.

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow!
Come one, come all, the Santa Security Squad Tryouts at the Blogger Blastorama, tomorrow, at Wade's Indoor Pistol Range in Bellevue, Washington at high noon.
In fact, the guy in that pic right there will be there with that very same firearm.
And because it is the Christmas season, I will have gifts for the first three new folks who show up. It ain't nothing grand, but it something that any good conservative would love to have.
I guess that I have never really made it too clear, but the Blogger Blastorama isn't just for people who write blogs. Anyone can come along for the fun!
Do you just read blogs? Or lurk in the ether?
Come on by and make thyself known, citizen!
We may seem to be a bit grumpy on the web, but we certainly don't bite (that much, anyway).
Never been shooting before? Like to try? We're your 'safe and sane' shooting partners. We've got guns for you to try and possibly a little ammo to share.
Again, Santa hats are optional, but make sure it can fit over your hearing protection.
PS: If anyone else is interested, I will be having a late breakfast/early lunch at the IHOP nearby (here's a map and address) at around 1100. Can't go shooting on an empty stomach, ya know.
Just start walking around to the tables and saying "Blog". I will be the one person who doesn't look at you funny. Yes, I will rescue you if the management trys to throw you out.

Getting Closer Every Day
Allllllrighty then,
When: Saturday, Dec, 4th
Where: Wade's of Bellevue
Time: 1200 until whenever
If anyone would like to meet for some eats beforehand, let me know via the comments or e-mail.
Again, novices are absolutely welcome to join in the fun to be had. We will have enough firearms of our own for you to borrow, if need be, or Wade's has rentals for you to partake.
I would like to thank Mike of Sworn Enemy and Og the Neanderpundit for the links yesterday.

Going to Church on Ya!
Well, its all my fault, but the last Blogger Blastorama was a long time ago.
Not to worry though!
I am calling "All Northwest Bloggers" to meet me at the Church of the Holy High Speed Projectile this upcoming weekend for tryouts for the "Santa Security Squad".
Ol' St. Nick is carrying millions of dollars of stuff in that big ass bag of his, and as he makes his rounds in a couple of weeks, you don't want it to be your house that he gets sleigh-jacked in front of, do you?
That'll mean no presents for you next year, bub!
There are rumors that The Rivrdog will be making the trek north from Oregon and be bringin his A-Team with him to play with.
I'm still coordinating the time and place. Your suggestions are certainly welcome in the comments or an e-mail.
And remember, novices are absolutely welcome to join. Going to the range is fun, but helping foster another shooting addict is icing on the cake.

Some RangeTime
Went and met up with the Raging Household at the Renton F&G; Range over the weekend. Dave should be posting a surprise shortly (let me know if there were problems with the pic, Dave) and I finally got used to shooting in my new glasses.
If anyone who wanders through RNS has any experience with today's DCM/CMP matches, please drop me a line as the 2005 matches will be starting around the end of January and I'd like to start prepping now. I shot my dad's 03A3's in matches alongside of him (so that he could order 03's and Garands in my name) when I was a true youngin', but that was over 15 years ago and I didn't really pay attention to the R&R.;
I'm probably going to use my Bushmaster (I've decided to keep it instead of use it as a trade in on an M1A. More on that later). Here is an average target from this last weekend. I'm pretty sure it'll be good enough to qualify. I just need to slow down and figure out my hold point. Sometimes I overconnect the lollipop.

Good News, Bad News
The Good News?
It's almost here, this weekend's Blastorama!
I'm thinking that we'll go back to Wade's in Bellevue (map) @ 1000 for a pre-Halloween release of ammo. If you're up for it, we can all meet at IHOP (map) @ 0900 for some breakfast (can't shoot very long on an empty stomach).
The Bad News?
I'm bringing the pumpkin stickers!
Sadly, because of the way the hunting season has fallen here in Washington State, there will not be a Pumpkin Splaughter this year.
If you do not know about last year's Grand Pumpkin Splaughter, go here, here and here for the words and the pics.
Good times.
I'm sure I could come up with the pumpkins, and I'm sure that I could find enough people who want to shoot them with me. But I'm not really sure that we all want to be out in the woods surrounded by hundreds of guys who are trying to be as quiet as possible so that they can bag a bambi.
Can you say "Incoming Fire"?
I was not able to talk a local range into letting me rent a portion of their range and bring in a hundred orange gourds and have me and my friends make them explode. Nor was I able to secure a freezer big enough to hold a hundred or so pumpkins until hunting season passes.
So I will be substituting orange stickers in the shapes of pumpkins that have no discernable race, creed or politcal bent.
I know, how bland. But if you put them out at 75ft, you can pretend that you're shooting them from 400yds away.

Frowny Faces
Part 1: The wife's parents are in town for the week, so no shooting over the weekend for this kid.
But that's OK because I'm here to announce that we'll be having the next Blogger Blastorama on Saturday the 23rd of October at a location to be determined by you, the public, by means of a democratic write-in election.
So, if you're in the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia/Everett area (or from outside there but would like to join us) please put your suggestion ballot (in the form a of a comment or email) and make your voice heard!
Part 2: The gallery owner I have been speaking about for the week has decided that targets are not art and refuses to take the challenge.
Aww shucks!
Oh well. We'll leave him alone now.
I think I can make better 'art' than the examples shown yesterday. Can't be putting out a substandard product anyway.

Blastorama After Action Report
Ahhh, we had a full house on Saturday for the September edition of the Blastorama. Raging Dave, the Raging Girlfriend, the Raging Girlfriend's son, Jake, Mollbot, Ms. Leigh and myself.
Lots of rounds were expended, firearms were shared and a good time was had by all.
We all took turns with Mike-Mike the Dog Faced Boy.
Notice the demarcations.
And we all took turns turns with Leigh's new AR.
And as a new feature to the Blogger Blastorama After Action Report, I have video. I was able to figure out how to make my new digital camera take QuickTime movies and got 14 seconds of Ms. Leigh firing her new AR.
Now, there are a couple things I need to mention. First, there is no sound because I couldn't afford the camera that has a mic jack. Second, because I'm still an idiot at times, and I held the camera wrong, it is sideways. I'll make sure not to do that in the future.
So, if you don't mind cocking your head to the right for a few seconds click here (some folks may have right click and open in new window or save target as, depending on your set-up).
Kewel!
Keep your eyes peeled here at RNS for the date of the next Blogger Blastorama.

See you tomorrow
It has been decided, the Seattle area bloggers will be meeting at Sam's in Everett tomorrow at 10am.
Again, I would like to invite any folks out there who might be on the fence about firearms or shooting. You are especially invited. Don't worry that you don't own any firearms. I will be bringing half a dozen or so and I'm sure that most of the other folks will be bringing things to share.
If you don't know where Sam's is or how to get there, just send me an e-mail and I'll gather up the info and send it your way.
Don't forget, I'm bringing these....
UPDATE: I forgot about breakfast!
As per Mollbot's reminder, I will be at the Denny's at the nearby offramp whose number I don't know because my Thomas Guide mapbook is in my truck @ 9am.
I'll updaue this update as soon as I can with the exit number and location of the Denny's.
UPDATE #2: It's the Denny's on 128th St SW. I-5 Exit #186. The Denny's sits on the west side of I-5 and on the south side of 128th.
See you there @ 9am.

What are you doing this Saturday?
Wanna go shootin'?
To commemorate the citizen's of the United States victory over the tyrannical legislation of the previous administration that resitricted our ability to buy firearms of our choice, I give to you, the first post ban Blogger Blasotrama.
It's time to partay!
I am still taking suggestions for the location of the get-together this time around. Wade's, Sam's, an outdoor range, etc.
I'll leave it open for those who want to attend to discuss and will tally up the votes and post it on Friday.

Blastorama Update
I haven't gotten any responses for the gathering I was thinking of for this Sunday. And that's OK. I will be really busy myself and was pretty sure most other folks would be as well.
I will be able to eek out a couple free hours on the afternoon that day and I will probably spend it at the Renton F&G; range.
Again, if anyone in the Seattle area would like to join me, novice or journeyman, just let me know and I'll get back to you with the times.
We're still on for Saturday the 18th, though. And I have a surprise for those who come that day.
They're 11"x17" and black and white, but they came out of the printer pretty well. I don't remember where I got the original from, but this is what it looked like.
Now, only a few ranges will let folks shoot targets with actual people pictured on them. I've sent out an e-mail or two to folks who I know go to Wade's in Bellevue and I will be calling a couple more local ranges and asking for the OK from them before I choose the location.
If you get time to go to the range this weekend, make sure you go. Hopefully, there'll be no Senate style monkey business and Monday will be a day of celebration.

A Good Day at the Range (and two range reports)
Met up with Raging Dave at Sam's yesterday and we had a good few hours punching holes in paper.
I brought along a few different firearms and shot most of them. Not exactly to my satisfaction, but hey, I was having a good time.
SKS, 30rnd group @ 50ft
(click all pics for supersized)
Dave should be posting a more impressive 20rnd group sometime in the next couple days, so keep your eyes open here.
The 14 did well on Saturday. About the only thing I could find wrong with it was that it's previous owner had cranked the adjustable sight all the way down and left it that way for a long time. The spring tension in the vertical adjustment leaf is all but gone and will have to be re-tensioned. Hence, it shot high.
But after some corrected aiming, it did just fine (two cylinder group @ 30ft).
I found the stock grips a little uncomfortable to shoot with sooooo, have a new set on the way. More pics when they arrive.
Range Report 2: Marlin 81TS
You may remember the Marlin 22LR boltie I bought right before I left for vacation. It had most likely been disassembled by a yokel (aka: a chucklehead) and reassembled incorrectly. I thought that I had fixed all the issues by going through a full dis and re myself, but it still would not extract the empty casing.
After taking a look at the bolt of Dave's Marlin yesterday, I found that the yokel had also broken the very tip off of the extractor. It is a $7.65 part and already on the way from Marlin, but this low tech firearm is proving to be more frustrating than I thought $85 could be.
But as a single shot with a fingernail extractor system it shoots pretty well (3-10rnd groups @ 50ft)
Hope you all had a good time at the range yesterday. And if you didn't go to the range yesterday, I hope you go today.

Range Report
So I finally got to go to the range yesterday. Standard report to follow.
A 10 shot group from the Bushmaster @ 100yds. Actually, 3 small groups and a flyer (click for bigger)
And I don't know if you've heard about this already, but Og at Neanderpundit is having a "Postal Match" (iron sights, sporter rifle only, 22 long rifle. Fifty feet, offhand only, standing, sling allowed but no rests).
Sadly, I don't have an iron-sighted 22 rifle anymore, unless I de-scope and rebarrel my 10/22, which I not really wanting to do right before a shooting vacation (re-boresighting and all), so I figured I'd just triple the distance and go freestanding with the 3x scope. Yeah, I know I can't enter it even if I sextuple the distance, but it was a fun exercise.
Here's the target anyway (click for bigger)
#1 UL, #2 UR, #3 LL, #4 LR. Since I didn't think to try this until almost the end of the day, the range actually closed before I could finish the target. Oh well.
Now go get some shooting done and send it on in to the Neanderpundit. Think of my #2 target as a good goal, because this is the entry list so far.

Range Report: Mauser
Do everything well enough that you don't have to do it twice, my dad once said. And I followed his advice today. When I screw up, I screw up well.
First, I forgot my 308 and 223 ammo on the counter at home. Second, I took over 20 rounds to sight in my $85 Spanish 308 Mauser.
"But wait a minute, Phil, I thought you said that you forgot your 308 ammo at home" you say. I did. Thing is though, I had a can of 100 rounds of linked 308 in the storage box in the back of my truck. Don't ask me why. I won't tell you.
And no, there isn't a pintel mount in the back of my truck. Yet.
Anyway, here is the target from the Spanish Mauser...
First pair went very high (the lowest point on the rear sight is 300yds). Changed aiming points and the next two went not so high. All seemed to be going well.
Yeah. Right.
Third pair went way low (WTF?). It was at this time I noticed that both of my barrels bands had come loose and were dangling at the end of the barrel and were being retained by the front sight. The guy who owned this before me did some work on the stock and must have sanded too much off. Oh well, I'll look for a new stock.
Problem solved (temporarily). Fourth and fifth pair, not so low. So I said screw it, made some adjustments and rechecked the barrel bands (worked themselves halfway off) and sent out a five shot group.
Me likee.
One more adjustment and put all but one of th rest in the black. I figured that the group wasn't bad for MG ball ammo.
I'll make sure to grab my 150gr Rem Core-Lokt for my time at the range tomorrow. Report to follow.
And Colt, I haven't named a gun in a while (see Mollbot or The Baron du Toit for that). But since this is a Spanish Mauser I'll nickname this one La Mouse (Mauser = mouser = mouse + spanish translation = La Mouse).

Announcement
Every weekend in the month of July will be a Blogger Blastorama.
I've got the attitude and the ammo. And I want to raise my percentage of hits in the black at 100yds.
I'm going to try to go on both Saturday's and Sunday's, so don't fret if you have to do something on one day but not the other.
Just e-mail me if you would like to join in the fun and we'll figure out where we're going.
Experienced or novice, it doesn't matter. I've got plenty of rifles to lend for all skill levels.
I'll make another announcement on every Thursday or Friday to remind y'all.
So come on out.

Blastorama review
Ahhh. The last Blast for June is done.
You'll have to pardon me for not remembering to put my camera in my range bag and only having a written report.
I arrived at one of the nicest rifle ranges I've been to in a long time, The Kenmore Gun Range at their 0900 opening time. When I started unloading the Ananlog Truck I noticed a large group of children and their parents walking from an outbuilding towards the rifle range. The children were carrying their rifles perfectly vertically and their parents were walking a couple paces behind them.
As I was walking to the range with my second load of equipment, I had my suspicions confirmed. It was a Hunter Saftey Class. And when I said it was a large group, I really meant that it was a huge group.
There were at least 40 kids in this class.
In contrast, my HSC had 11 students.
Kewel.
Anyway, Mollbot arrived shortly thereafter with Victoria (A Number 1, Mark III Short Magazine Lee-Enfield in .303 British). Raging Dave, the Raging Girlfriend and their friend Hodge rolled up not too long afterwards.
I wish I could tell you how well their day went, but with me only getting small amounts of sleep these past couple of weeks combined with 80+ degree temps and humidity you almost had to swim through, I wussed out after three hours of shooting to go home and eat and take a nap.
I can tell you that I made an error when I assembled the A2 sighting system on my Bushmaster that made it shoot almost 2 feet high at 100yds. The error is fixed and I'll be going to the range again this weekend to try again. Otherwise, the SKS and the 10/22 did halfway decently in the accuracy department despite using some of the crappiest ammo ever manufactured.
If you didn't go to the range this weekend, make sure to go on the next.

Una Mas
Here we go again....
This Saturday, the Blastorama crew will be meeting at the Kenmore Range (one of the slickest range websites I have ever seen). (map)
I'll be there around 9AM to partake of the rifle range for a few hours. The pistol range opens at noon, so I will be heading over there at that time.
Once again, I would like to make the offer to anyone who wishes to join us, novice, expert or anywhere in between. Now, I didn't see anything about gun rentals at their place, but no matter, I will be bringing a host of different rifles and pistols with me and I think the same could be said for others who will be showing up.

Yippie-Ky-Yay
And so passes the first of the June Blogger Blastoramas.
Good Times.
We got to see Ms. Sondra K and her husband JR again. We also got to see Ms. Leigh again. Want proof? Here you go.
If you followed Sondra k's posts last week, you saw that she was in the market for her first pistol. She spent the day trying out the rental guns in the case at Wade's and shooting the personal pistols that other folks had brought.
Here she is shooting my CZ83.
And here is Leigh with the first of my two Bushmaster XM-15s
After a few hours of shooting, it became apparent to Ms. Sondra that the CZ was the gun she liked the best. I wasn't really surprised, everyone who has shot it likes it.
Sadly, Wade's didn't have any. We proceeded to another retailer where they not only had a CZ83, they had three. Including one in a very nice stainless steel version that I had never seen before and isn't even offered on their website.
So now Ms. Sondra is a gun owner. Congratulations, Sondra K "Queen of F*ckin' Everything".
I'll be posting the info for the next Blastorama later this week.

It has been decided
The Blastorama Mama, Ms. Sondra K, has decided that we will be going to Wade's of Bellevue for the first installment of the Blastorama for June.
The usual terms apply. Breakfast at IHOP @ 9am (map).
Wade's @ 10am (map).
I again, want to invite any local bloggers or blog readers to join us for one or both meet ups. Novices and experts alike are welcome to attend. If this is your first time shooting, fear not. Every single person who will be meeting this weekend has been in that boat and I can say that your first time out will be instructive and positive.
And if anyone else around the country goes to the range this weekend, take pics and send them to me. I'll get them put up here at RNS.

In the Works
Time to announce the next Blogger Blastorama.
Now, Ms. Sondra K and JR have been absent from the Blastoramas for a bit, soooooooo.....
As I would greatly like to have them attend this time around, I will be giving her the chance to choose the locale for Saturday the 12th.
For anyone wanting to attend, you are certainly allowed to help her out by suggesting locations and possibly even bribing her.
And while we're on the subject of guns, stop by Raging Dave's place and congratulate him on the purchase of his new SKS.

my version
The M-16, not A, not A1, not A2, not M-4, the original unvarnished M-16. No forward bolt assist, triangular hand guards, and though it's obscurred, possibly the three point flash suppressor. Prone to stoppages and feed jams, occasional missfires and general all around cussing. We compensated by high levels of maintenence, lots of training, and mutual support. You learned how to field strip one in a Hell of a hurry with the instructer using a stop watch.
Even so, I liked it. I would have opted to carry other weapons if that were my option, but, I didn't always pull M-60 gunner on the duty roster. I've only picked up a member of the M-16 family twice since my discharge, my baby brother owned an AR-15 for a time and needed to learn how to clean it. It's fun to shoot, but AK's right, our guys need a heavier caliber. A manstopper.

Updates meet Linky Love
First off, you should go here and read Mollbot's account of this weekend's Blastorama.
It includes this pic of my Bushmaster in action....
And a surprise.
I'll give you a hint. Her name in Victoria.
Next up, you should go here and read the freshest news on the USS Olympia controversy taking place in Ms. Sondra's town.
Let's just say that Rachel Corrie's buddies at Evergreen State College are scared.
If you haven't been keeping up on the USS Olympia scandal, you can look here, here and here.

Event
How many people watched The History Channel's "Mail Call with R. Lee Ermey" this last Sunday Night?
You didn't? That's too bad. Because you missed some inspiration.
For the folks who didn't watch, here's what went down.
R. Lee Ermey was discussing shotguns. Tired of blasting watermelons, he had a set up of paint cans hung over a painters canvas. He then proceeded to shoot the paint cans with a 12ga Winchester 1897 (aka the M1917 Trenchgun).
Creating a Gunny Ermey orginial (sorry, no pic available)
I am wanting to duplicate this at the next Blastorama.
I can supply the frame to hang the paintcans from and price canvas vs. butcher paper and paint.
Then, you supply the appropriate firearm and ammo and let your inner artise pull the trigger.
Let me know what all you Sea/Tac/Oly Blastorama regulars think.

Blast off
And now, the last Blogger Blastorama for May is in the recordbooks. We had planned on going into the sticks where we turned pumpkins into pie last fall for this one, but Ma Nature decided that we should stay inside. Oh well, this is Washington State after all.
The other bad news is that I didn't bring spare batteries for my camera, so there are very few pics.
We decided on going to Sam's Indoor Range of Everett so that we could get some short range rifle practice in. I had a half case of 7.62x39 to shoot through my still kind of new SKS and 200rnds of 5.56 with which to test out my brand new and self assembled Bushmaster XM-15.
In attendance were myself, Mollbot and his friend, Nick, and Raging Dave and the Raging Girlfriend.
After a good breakfast, we hit the lanes.
I am happy to say that the Bushmaster worked quite well, despite the fact that I haven't assembled one on over a decade. With some 20rnd Colt AR mags I found and bought, there were only 3 stoppages in over 200rnds. I had one on the third round of the first mag that was the guns fault, and then two mag related stoppages.
And it did this at 25yds in semi-rapid fire (one round per second) offhand.
Eh, not bad.
Keep your eyes open, the June Blastoramas will most likely be held on the 12th and the 19th. More info to follow.

Whiz Bang
Another successful Blogger Blastorama is in the record books. Mollbot, his friends John and Jon and myself went to Wade's of Bellevue to make sure that pieces of paper with black circles on them knew who was in charge.
Because there weren't a lot of people there first thing in the AM, they let us shoot the SKS for a little bit. Here's Mollbot slinging some lead with (my SKS now sports the optional, bayonet mounted bi-pod).
(all pics enlarge with a click)
Here's his buddy Jon with the Ruger 22/45
And here's Mollbot with his Remington 597
I also got into the action with my 10/22 from the bench. Here are the results.
Each of those spots is 2-10rnd mags @ 60 feet or so with junk Remongton ammo. I'm working on being able to do that at 100yds.
Don't forget to stop by Morpholine to read Mollbot's account and see his targets.
In other news, Raging Dave now has a blogspot site up for his Molon Labe stickers.
Go there and buy a few. If I was a little less lazy, I'd show you what I've done with the half dozen I bought. Check back tomorrow for pics.
Next up, Kim du Toit has switched to a live comments section. And he has pics from The Boomershoot up as we speak.
And finally, the voting is complete and next weekend's Blastorama will be taking place at the Pumpkin Splaughter location from last fall.
If you would like to attend, please send me an e-mail for directions.

Decisions, Decisions
What with ma nature's little problem defrosting at the location I had chosen for the Blastorama on the 22nd, we are at somewhat of an impasse as to where to go.
So I am asking for a vote of sorts.
Now, I have a couple of caveats I'd like folks to keep in mind.
I will not have the time in the next two weeks to seek out any new locations below the snowline. 12hr shifts (noon to midnight) will be the norm at my work for a while (we're short a person or two), so that idea is right out.
Also, I have my new SKS and 500rnds of ammo, PLUS, I'll definitely have my Bushmaster finished by then. So I want to go somewhere we can shoot rifles.
This means no Wade's.
Our choices are currently:
Sam's in Everett (no known website)
The Pumpkin Splaughter location.
Sam's is pretty much like Wade's except that they allow rifle cartridges (below 3000fps velocity). Range fees are, if I remember right, $9.
Renton Fish and Game is an outdoor range with a large skeet range, action pistol, target pistol and slowfire 100yd and 200yd rifle facilities. Fees are charged by what you want to shoot. Check the link for range fees.
The location of the Pumpkin Splaughter is outdoors. You can shoot just about anything you want, but the max range is probably about 25yds. It is free, but if the weather is nice, we may have to share the space with strangers who want to shoot there as well.
I am asking that those who wish to attend leave their opinion as to where they want to go. And if you please, why.
Thanks.

Neal, do have Wednesday morning off?
Because Cedric Richmond of Orleans Parish is declaring WAR on the Second Amendment in Louisiana. Just go to the Legislature homepage and view instruments by Legislator, and pick Richmond there.
Richmond is proposing ballistic 'fingerprinting';
handgun registration - with a $25 dollar surcharge on handguns to pay for it;
'assault weapon' ban - with contradictory definitions of 'assault weapon';
arresting people with firearms within 1000 feet of a 'parade route', unless they are on duty police. Own a store by the parade, and keep a gun? Arrested. Off duty cop working security at a resturant 3 football fields from a Gay Pride parade, arrested. Driving by a block over? Arrested.
Neal if you can, go to the Capitol on Wednesday at 9:30am, House Committee Meeting for Criminal Justice, Room 6. Please write your House and Senate members, too.
The bills in question are HB 241, 243, 244, 245, and 1222

Shooting Sports
The Blastorama, you gotta love it.
Besides myself, your players for this weekend at the range were...(click for large pics)
Raging Dave (Dave's range report is here)
and Mollbot (Mollbot's range report is here)
And thought I was doing rather well (24 rounds/21ft)
And since Kimber STILL isn't done with Mollbot's Pro Carry II, I lent him mine. And look what he did
Eh, I can live with it.
The tentative date for the next Blastorama will be May 15th. So get ready.

In gun news
Today, I got the new Spring 2004 J&G Sales catalog in the mail.
Damn you J&G!! Why do you tempt me?
$298.50!!!
A toss-around semi-auto 308 for under $300!
While I flog myself mentally for not keeping funds available for something like this, let me remind everyone that the Blogger Blastorama is tomorrow.
Wade's of Bellevue @ 10AM (map)
Or, if you're hungry IHOP (map) @ 9AM
Come one, come all.

Doing it again!
Here we go with the Blogger Blastorama for the month of April.
Once again we will invade Wade's of Bellevue (map) and take over many lanes as necessary.
It will take place on this Saturday, April 17th @ 10am.
We will, of course, also be overrunning the local IHOP (map) at 9am and confiscating their pancakes (they can keep the waffles).
Again, I would like to put a personal invite out to anyone who would like to join us. Whether you are a novice or an expert, come on down and we'll put some rounds downrange.

Sun and Fun
Let it never be said that bloggers don't like to have fun.
Or that we won't travel a bit to have said fun.
This weekend Mollbot, Raging Dave and the Raging Girlfriend and I went to visit Ivan (click on the links to see Mollbot's and Dave's rendition of events)
(All pics get bigger when you click them)
I have heard that he is called Crazy Ivan by his friends.
I can't really figure out why.
Anyway, we all hustled on over to the Tri-Cities area of Washington state so that we could meet up with Ivan and his wonderful invention, the MARS.
You see, Ivan has a nice sized swath of land and has built himself a range.
125yds from the bench.
We all got to shoot Ivan's 50BMG boltie.
And for those who think that a 50BMG boltie is a shoulder bruising projectile thrower, here is a 12yr old firing it.
Some myths are exactly that.
And after that warm up we got into lighting off our own weapons
There's Dave and his '03 Sporter
And Mollbot with his father's Winchester 94
We took a break around noon or so for the pot-luck portion of the event. There were large quantities of elk chili eaten along with a smattering cornbread, prawns (my addition) and then double fudge brownies for dessert (a gift from Mollbot).
Here is a group of well fed, happy people ready to go shooting once again.
At the end of the day, we decided that the MARS System was getting lonely and found a target that had been asking to be ventilated. So Dave did exactly that.
That would be dirt flying in the background. We all took turns with the MARS that afternoon, I just suck at photography and didn't get many great pics and only greatness is allowed at RNS (and here come the choruses of "so what are you doing here Kid?" Funny ha-ha).
I would like to thank our host for the wonderful hospitality this weekend. I had a great time and will be back next year, or sooner Mr. Ivan..........?

Takin' the show on the road
Myself and some of the Blastorama Crew Have been invited to join a gentleman in the eastern half of our state for a get-together that involves the use of large quatities of ammuntion.
I'll be gone all day, not getting back until late, etc, etc.
Pics will be posted on Monday.
In the meantime,
Head over to Ms. Sondra K's place and let her introduce you to her cousin Joe, Command Sergeant Major of the 504th MP Battalion, just back from Iraq.
I was not able to meet him myself, but I'm sure that when he comes back to the area, there will be meals paid for, range fees bought, and as many rounds of his choice of alcohol as he can stand waiting for him.

A special Edition of the Blastorama
A few weeks back, in the comments section, you may have seen mention of this,
That is the MARS (Modular Assault Rifle System) created by our friend Ivan.
Here is a little info:
The MARS is a combination trigger activator/weapons mount for the Kalashnikov rifle series, and will work with any combination of them, AK, AKM, 47/74 Mak-90, Maadi etc.
A single MARS will mount and fire at full auto rate two semi auto AK style rifles simultaneously via a crank mechanism, or any 3/8" square drive, or 1/2" axle hub pulley, trip wire, electric motor, cordless drill, pendulum motion sensor, or kinetic energy stimuli.
Firing rate is capable of emptying a 75 round drum in 10 seconds, and is BATF legal in any state that allows trigger activators.
Can you say "YEEE_HAWW!!!!!"?
Now, Ivan lives on the eastern side of Washington State near the area known as the 'Tri-Cities' and has his own range.
Myself and a couple of Blogger Blastorama regulars have been invited to spend part of the upcoming Easter weekend with Ivan. He would also like to put out the invite to anyone else who would like to join us.
If you are interested, just e-mail me for directions.
And for those of you cannot make it, pictures will be posted the following Monday.

A day late (or two)
A hearty (and belated) welcome back to the du Toit family.
If you havn't yet stopped by Kim's or the Mrs. respective places recently, do so today.
In honor of their return, I offer a Blast Ad that I believe conveys a message that Kim would agree with (among mixed company. Something a bit more rude would probably be in order when amongst men only).
Welcome back, Kim and family.

Nice shooting, Tex (Part 2)
In a follow up report to the Blastorama post from yesterday, I give you....
Pics of the competition between Rivrdog, Mollbot and myself.
Here is the first set of targets (Distance-21ft)
I'm the one on the left, Mollbot in the center and Rivrdog on the right.
After an official measuring, it came out that MB and RD tied. So the three of us went at it again. This time, at 50ft.
Which led to another tie between MB and RD.
So they went at it again.
If I remember right, by a fraction of an inch, it came out that Rivrdog was the more accurate of the three of us.
I bow to superior accuracy. Congratulations Rivrdog.

Good Shootin', Tex
Another Blogger Blastorama is in the record books.
While there were only three folks in attendance, it was still and excellent time as I got to meet another northwest blogger (Oregon).
The Rivrdog joined the Mollbot and I to let the lead fly.
Not only did he join us, he beat us both for accuracy (and in all honesty, I came in third. Twice).
The next Blogger Blastorama is tenatively scheduled for April 17th (to tie in with Aaron the Liberal Slayer's "Buy a Gun" Day).
But I will have an announcement about a special Blastorama (previous to the 17th) in the near future. So keep thine eyes peeled.
And get out to the range, Dammit!

And I'm Off
To the range.
The Blogger Blastorama is here!
Your assignment for today:
Go shooting
Or
Support the troops by counter protesting the leftie wackoloons.
Either way, send me pics.
While you can do both (as I will try to do today), try not to do them at the same time.
It is considered bad form and illegal (by most).

March 16, 2004
Here we go again!
It's time for yet another Blogger Blastorama!
"This time it's personal!"
This Saturday is the first day of Spring.
It is also an 'International Day of Protest' for the looney left.
They are going all out to protest the first anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq.
So, in my own demented way, I decided that there is no better way to counter-protest than to be at the range.
That way, if the wackoloons get what they want (complete civil unrest, for those not in the know), we'll already be where the ammo and the guns are.
It also provides for a great alibi if your whereabouts are questioned because of a group of demonstrators who were battered with golf balls shot out of a fully automatic air cannon (or worse. And I have never done said act. Nope, wasn't me).
We will, per usual, be gathering at Wade's Eastside Range in Bellevue (map) at 10am.
And of course, having breakfast beforehand at the IHOP nearby (map) at 9am.
As is standard, I would like to put out the invite to any and all who wish to join us. There will be a good selection of firearms to borrow from fellow Blasters, plus another forty or so that you can rent from Wade's for a fee.
If you are a beginner, do not worry about being embarrassed. Everyone was a novice at first. I think you'll find it fun and educational at the same time (and how often do you get that?).
So join us, won't you?

I've been framed
Actually, I've been framing.
Surprise #2
Target stands folks.
They stand 6ft tall.
They separate into two easily trasported pieces.
They have removable center panels (so that when they are shot to sh*t, you dont have to replace the whole backboard).
I wasn't kidding a couple weeks back when I said I was planning on taking the Blogger Blastorama's outdoors. And these are quite neccesary for that recreation.
I scrounged up enough material for 3 complete stands. I hope to have at least ten built for shooting this summer. (please see extended entry for more on this)
If you would like a set of plans with supply lists, feel free to e-mail me.
And speaking of the Blogger Blastorama,
This Saturday the 20th, bay bay!
More info tomorrow
I used second hand materials because I have seen what high speed projectiles do to 2×4s. I am not a rich man and therefor, I went through a few "Free Wood" piles near my work.
For these stands, you really only need 2×4 and plywood.
The only problem with used wood is that there will probably be nails in it that will have to be removed. But that is what kids are for, right?
Give your kids a hammer, a prybar and let them go to town. A quarter for each removed nail. Minus a quarter for each mail missed.
Money for work, what better lesson is there than that?
The hardest part is finding the 6+ft boards for the stand up portion.
The best part is that the majority of these boards came from a home remodel job.
This wood used to be part of a house, now they will be used to teach someone how to defend their house.

Awww Yeah, bay-bay!
So, another Blogger Blastorama is done and gone.
But I gots me some pictures to show ya.
Now, as was stated last week, we had to say goodbye to Mr. C of Dogtulosba fame. He is going away for a few months to 'vacation' with the Army in the mid-west, and we couldn't let him leave without a bang.
And, as was also mentioned, it was Mollbot's Birthday. I assure you that you wouldn't want him to eat a cake that I baked, so he didn't get one.
Instead, the others of us in attendance treated them both (and ourselves) to the gorgeous Weapon of Wrist Destruction, the S&W 500 Magnum revolver.
Here is Mr. C (click for bigger pic)
And here is Mollbot (also click)
Raging Dave takes his turn (click)
Because I have very little skill with the camera, I was not able to caputre a recoil shot with Dave, nor was I able to get a shot of the brave Raging Girlfriend lighting the 500 off. I'm sure that someone got one, so we'll see about tomorrow.
Luckily, someone was able to get one of me "Goin' 50cal" on some poor target. (click)
And here is the poor target (click)
Alllllrighty then!
The next Blogger Blastorama is going to be on March 20th (The First Day of Spring). Anyone and everyone is welcome to come with us, even if you can only join us for breakfast (Howdy Ken).
I am probably going to get even louder about this next one than I did for the last one to try and get as many people to go shooting on the 20th as possible. And I don't mean just here in Seattle. If you run a blog or have a favorite blog you read, let them know about the Blastorama. See if they will take a day off the keyboard and get themselves to the range.
I've met some really great folks in my area by using RNS to invite them to go shooting. I think everyone should meet some really great folks in their area by doing the same.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't take a villiage to raise a child. And it doesn't take a village to teach someone how to shoot either.

Don't you know that there is and empty range booth with your name on it somewhere?

Be there or be square.

And finally
Only one more day until the next Blogger Blastorama.
And I would also like to say that as well as wishing Mr. C from Dogtulosba a fond farewell (even if just temporarily this time), we will also be wishing Mollbot a Happy 27th Birthday this weekend.
And, in honor of all the hullabaloo, more Blast Ads....
See you all on the morrow.

Even More Blast Ads
Only two more days to go until the first of two March Blogger Blastoramas arrives.
I've already counted my ammuntion supply three times and still cannot come to a conclusion as to whether I have enough or not.
Anyway, here are a couple more Blast Ads for you enjoyment/distribution.
And make sure to stop by Four Right Wing Whackos and Dogtulosba to see Raging Dave's and Mr Chad's Blast Ads

More Blast Ads
Again, I would like put out an invite to folks in the Olympia/Tacoma/Seattle/Everett area to join some area bloggers at the range.
And here are some more "Blast Ads", made with help from RNS readers.
Again, if you would like to contribute a slogan for a Blast Ad, please feel free to do so.

More Blast Ads
Yesterday, while letting everyone know about the next "Blogger Blastorama" going on this Saturday. March 6th, I introduced you all to the newest example of the Analog Kid's mad photoediting skilz (hey! quit laughing) with the 'Blast Ads'.
Today, I give you some more.
More to come tomorrow.
PS - If anyone has any other slogans that they think might look cool in a 'Blast Ad', leave them in the comments.

Kewel
In case you missed it, the next Blogger Blastorama was announced last Friday.
I would personally like to invite any and all folks who would like to join us for a day at the range to please do so.
I would also like to extend a very special invite to folks who may not have shot a firearm before or haven't done so in a long time. As long as you have a good mind for safety, you are especially welcome. There will be multiple private firearms in attendance that, I'm sure the owners would not mind you borrowing for a while during the day. There is also a rental case with usually around 40-50 pistols and 4 or 5 rifles available for a small fee.
So please, feel free to join us.
Again, it will be held at Wade's Range in Bellevue (map). Meeting time is 10AM (we are usually there until 14:00 - 15:00 if you cannot make it exactly at 10AM).
There will also be a meeting at 9AM at the nearby IHOP (map) if you feel like getting some breakfast beforehand.
And now I would like to direct your attention to the extended entry where I have a surprise for you all.
I was a busy boy this weekend.
Feel free to borrow any of these for posting at your site or tell other bloggers to come here and borrow them for posting at their sites.
Yes, I do plan on moving back out to the woods this summer for a no holds barred Blastorama. Bring anything that is 1. Legal in Washington State, and 2. Goes bang.
And both Ms. Leigh and Ms. Sondra were kind enough to give me permission to use their photos for some Blastorama advertising.
Mr. Dave, you have an e-mail waiting on this subject.
Others who have joined us at Blastoramas in the past stand the possiblity of getting e-mails on this topic as well.
And if anyone else has any 'hidden' pics of folks at "past Blasts", send them to me so I can go through them please.

Blogger Blastorama
Mission: Complete
Hey all, hope everyone out there in the 'sphere had a good weekend. All of us here in the Seattle area who attended the Blastorama sure did. We had the usual crew of myself, Raging Dave from 4 Right Wing Wackos, Mollbot from Morpholine, SondraK and JR from Knowledge is Power, Chad from Dogtulosba Inc and our original Blogger Groupie, the wonderful Ms. Leigh.
Add to that the guests that both Mollbot and Chad brought along to join in the fun, and we almost tied the record for attendance. Not a bad turnout for St. Valentine's Day weekend.
Anyway, I actually remembered to take more than a few pics for posting this time around and, without further ado, here are the pics (click for the bigger pic).
Ladies first, of course.
Here we have Ms. Leigh testing the new grips on my CZ
This is the newly armed SondraK with her stainless Marlin semi-auto 22LR
And this is Mollbot's guest, Dana, with the Ruger 22/45. For a first time shooter, she picked up quick and was putting them in the black in short order.
And now to the gentlemen.
Chad's getting a grip on what looks to be a 40cal Glock
And here is Chad's guest, Dan, letting go with Ms. Leigh's Win 94 Trapper 357Mag
JR gets a turn to send some lead downrange with his and Sondra's new Marlin
Here, Dave lets his rage subside and, without words, lets the target know exactly how he feels with his Marlin.
I've saved the action shot for last. I was able to capture the last 2/3 of the muzzel blast from Mollbot's S&W; Model 19.
And neener, again you get no pictures of me! But that's all right, you don't need to be frightend that badly on a Monday morning.
Of course, I think there were a couple of other cameras there this time and if you follow the links at the top and ask nicely, you might be able to get those folks to send them to me for posting.
The tentative date for the next blogger meet is the 20th of March (aka the First day of Spring).
So mark your calenders, pencil us in your dayplanners or enter us into your PalmPilot, but be there or be square.
And for all of you folks not in the Seattle area, I would like to try to take blogger events like this nationwide. So, as soon as we concrete a date, get ready to go to your local ranges and join us in spirit. And send pics!

Shoot PIcs and Stuff
So, hopefully you were able to read about the Seattle Area Blogger Meet, Greet and Shoot that took place the weekend of the big iPowerWeb sneeze that put us at our current address.
I now have a couple of pics to post and another story to tell.
First off, there was so much fun being had that hardly anyone took pictures. I only have two to speak of myself.
Here is Ms. Leigh with my 870. That poor target never stood a chance. I also hear a little bird who is telling me that Ms. Leigh will be getting a shotgun for her birthday. If only we all could be so lucky.
Next up, you might remember that the weekend of the shoot was also my birthday weekend (coincedence, I don’t think so). But I never thought that it would lead to this.
This is my birthday cake brought by Ms. SondraK and her husband Joe.
Mmmmm, tasty. And I got to keep the ornaments.
They also got me this. Guns are not toys. But toys can be guns.
AND, the folks who came to the meet also got together and gave me a GI Joe’s Gift Card. I would again like to thank those who contributed. I knew we had the best readers in the ’sphere here at RNS, but this was, without a doubt, was the most unexpected birthday gift I’ve ever received.
And here is what I got at GI Joe’s with your gift. A steel, two rifle case (Remington 870 not included) made by AGS. Again guys, thank you.
And that concludes the Blogger Shoot section of this post.
And now, for something not completely different.
I’m crusing through Dogtulosba the week after the Blogger Shoot and see that he will be at Wade’s the very next weekend with some people from his ROTC program. I ask if it is OK if I happen to be at Wade’s and he gives me the thumbs up. Unfortunately, I put it in the back of my head and forget to tell anyone else that we will be going. My apologies.
Anyway, Dogtulosba arrives with 25 or so of his MSII’s and they proceed to make a run on the rental case and a good time was had by all. Right before the ROTC session was about to end, him and I decide to rent the S&W; 500 Mag revolver, thereby impressing the recruits that their LT is even more ballsy than they had previously thought.
It is rumored that there was an attempt to pry the smile on his face off with a crowbar the next day. It ultimately proved to be impossible. I also heard that the NCOIC that shared the 500 with us had the same trouble.
What follows are pop-up links to some of my targets from that day. I had a much better day, accuracy wise, this last Saturday than I did during the Blogger Shoot.
And just to let any and all know, the Next Blogger Shoot will be on St. Valentine’s Day, Saturday Feb 14th.
The CZ83 @ 21ft. It shoots so well that you can get 3 groups on on target.
And finally, here is the 10/22 at 60+ft (all the way back to the gravel)
